Will Computer Hardware and Technological Innovation

If you will recall back in Ronald Reagan’s day as President, there was a showdown between his administration and the air traffic control workers. He warned them not to strike or they’d be fired – they did, and they were. End of story, or is it. That is to say will history repeat in the future if we bring forth Artificial Intelligent Computers, New Computer Hardware, and the third phase of NextGen ATC equipment and technologies? I believe so, and thus, we were having a conversation about these potential future eventualities at our Think Tank recently.

Consider if you will some of our comments here – think about what Troy Laclaire is saying and some of the points of contention I bring up, and I’d like to start this dialogue out with reminding folks that anytime human beings develop better tools to do their jobs, there will be fewer jobs to do, thus, some folks will be let go. The jobs that remain will be lower skill levels and much higher skill levels but those in the middle will disappear.

Now then, when it comes to the latest and greatest air traffic control systems being introduced one must ask why will we need humans in the process. After all, most of the near misses or runway incursions are due to human error, either air traffic controllers or the pilots themselves. So, let’s remove them from the situation. Yes, both the pilots and the controllers. But today, let’s talk about air traffic controllers, as future UAVs will surely tell all the pilots; “You’re Fired!” but that’s for another article.

If we use the recording and data from the best air traffic controllers to program the AI system, then the controllers will inevitably be worked out of a job right? So, I said jokingly; Train the computers, and let the Air Traffic Control B.A.S.E. jump off the tower to grow some balls? But seriously, what will we use all those old control towers for, as the computers will most likely be underground in air-conditioned rooms with full electronic security, no one goes in or out unless they have clearance as the official IT personnel for the system?

Now then, we may as well some of those control towers for something, but they are many stories tall, so should we dismantle them instead? Troy notes; “If this type of system was put in place, you wouldn’t have a need really for a control tower, and could put everyone below ground.” Right, which was another point, namely; what to use them for – restaurants, observation decks, tours, lounges, bars? BASE Jumping locations? Sniper towers to get the bad guys – what?

Troy wonders; “well, there are many different uses you can use the current towers for. Heck, why not setup homeless shelters or lease the building out to companies to use as remote data centers since they already have communications capabilities?” And really he’s onto something there, it’s a great place for antennas, and all those control towers are fully wired.

Well, out with the old computer hardware, in with the new, but indeed, this does change everything, fewer jobs, less human error, and more systems. Please consider all this.

Technology Innovation

No matter what innovations your organization has decided to pursue, and regardless of the innovation strategy you’re following, there will always come a point where innovators need to deal with their information technology cousins.

Technology is at the center of most production and productivity in many industries, from those dominated by industrial age economics to the emerging innovation economy companies that are presently leading the charge to recovery.

As a result, information technology can be considered either a necessary evil that prevents things getting done or, alternatively, a massive enabler of competitive advantage and worker productivity. Perspectives vary depending on the way an IT organization deals with change on a day to day basis.

No matter the perception of the information technology group, there is a key thing that those responsible for innovation will find very hard to avoid: the extreme emphasis that most IT professionals place on minimizing change. In information technology organizations, there will likely be change teams, in fact, whose sole role in life is to make it as hard as possible to change anything. They will rationalize their existence using lines such as “we are here to protect service” or “up-time is our number one priority”. And for those times when change is impossible to avoid there will be a number of gates and governance processes in places designed to make things as difficult as possible. At least, from the perspective of innovators, that is.

For most innovation teams, rigorous focus on the disciplines of innovation management are a positive way to manage the technologists in organizations. They provide tools and processes which are able to demonstrate to IT professionals that the changes the innovators want to do are in both the interests of the organization, and, more often than not, in the interests of IT as well.

In a poll, 75% of the seniors asked admitted that they would rather use whatever means available if it meant they could stay in their own homes longer. In addition, the enormous influx of retirees getting ready to hit their golden years is going to push hospital and nursing facility care expenses higher and higher due to increased demand. This generation of seniors is also the first that is comfortable using the new technologies and won’t hesitate to take the opportunities that present themselves.

Many industries are taking part in the research and development of this new elder care system. It is estimated that the new equipment could generate $1.5 billion to $2.5 billion making it a worthwhile pursuit for both businesses and elderly patients.

They estimate that more than $25 million is spent every year on just the readmission of patients to hospitals and nursing facilities and believe that costs could be cut by 75% if these people could be monitored at home instead of having to be admitted to hospitals so often.

It’s amazing what new technology can do, and this sounds like a system that needs to be explored further and expanded to cover all seniors with medical issues who are still living in their own homes. Instead of rising medical costs collapsing the Medicare system, we could look forward to lowered costs and fewer claims.

Innovation for Business

There is a lot of information around at the current time regarding innovative technology, but the biggest headline has to be the growth of cloud-based IT models, a transforming and accessible way for small businesses and new businesses to access excellent IT technology that has previously been exclusive to large businesses and organisations. Cloud technologies are simply those IT models that can be developed and accessed online making more traditional and expensive IT options a thing of the past.

Top of the range IT solutions in the traditional sense, come at a price and for smaller businesses they are not a viable option. In the current economic market and a ‘spending cut’ phenomena spreading all through the country businesses are reluctant to spend excessively for IT. A UV Technology Innovator

Oliver Lawal is like many scientists and engineers in the UV technology field, with intellectual interests that span a wide range. At the University of Manchester England, where he studied electrical, mechanical and software engineering, “I couldn’t decide on one field of study,” recalled Lawal, “so I graduated with multiple degrees and an understanding of several areas.”

After this, he worked on a UV installation at a nuclear power station in France. Lawal then went on to work on the largest UV wastewater project in the world (at that time) in Auckland, New Zealand.

All of these endeavors have contributed to Lawal’s outlook and vision for UV technology. In this growing field, technology is evolving quickly. Lawal refers to this growth as the water-energy-technology nexus. “We have the ability to help ensure sustainability of our most precious resources for future generations by developing better and better technical solutions to our water and energy stresses,” commented Lawal.

Oliver Lawal’s family has been involved with the energy industry for some time. His grandfathers were motor sport enthusiasts and this helped to stimulate his initial interest in technology and engineering. Yet it was Lawal’s parents’ interest in environmental issues that ultimately led him to a career in water. He recalls his father’s comments about the difference in experiencing oil or water shortages expressed this way: “If we run out of oil tomorrow, we’ll all be driving electric cars. But, if we run out of clean water tomorrow, driving will be the least of our problems.”

Lawal’s professional life is challenging and rewarding. Today, he’s a board member with International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) and he is president of Aquionics Inc., a company with a 30-year track record in selling and maintaining UV water disinfection technology to municipal and industrial water and wastewater markets in North America. Lawal shares a birthday with Amelia Earhart, and he professes to have the same sense of adventure as her. In his leisure time, he enjoys riding motorcycles and driving racecars, activities that reinforce his passions for technology and adventure.

The UV technology industry has changed since he began his career in the late 90s and it will continue to evolve. “From the perspective of equipment design and operation there is no question that our ability to more accurately predict and control process performance has increased dramatically,” notes Lawal. New techniques such as computational fluid dynamics, microbiological assays, power control and UV-C monitoring are more refined and more commonplace now. “This has resulted in great improvements in energy consumption and a reduction in operational risk,” observes Lawal.

Lawal believes that growth and improvement in UV water disinfection technology has a direct impact on the public health, by controlling pathogens in public water and wastewater supplies. “The sheer breadth of applications seen today, targeting very specific results, is staggering,” says Lawal. “The reduction of endocrine disrupting compounds, total organic compounds, ozone, chloramine, chlorine, cryptosporidium and viruses are commonplace and the applications using them expanding,” he added. Applications that are directly impacted include: ballast water, combined sewage overflows, aquatics, hydraulic fracturing, medical devices, semi-conductors, pharmaceuticals and more.

As president of a leading provider of UV technology, Lawal maintains a focused approach with a close eye towards ethical concerns. “It is important that we do not take shortcuts for short term commercial gains,” he says. “As the sphere and influence of UV technology grows, and new technical solutions like UV-LED’s become available, we need to ensure all stakeholders: regulators, process designers and users understand the critical issues. Regulation is important – it must be robust yet enabling. Process design must be sound and ensure seamless integration with other technologies. And ultimately the technology must be executed in a manner that allows safe and reliable operation.”

By focusing his life’s work on improving the quality of public water and wastewater with UV technology, Lawal is reiterating his parents’ vision for a cleaner environment and taking the necessary actions to implement this by working towards these goals on a daily basis.

Innovation is the name of technology and so Asus has come out with an innovative product called Asus Padfone. The Asus Padfone is speculated to be priced at $1000. This product is a Smartphone that fits into the dock of the tablet and has an Android platform.

The phone features

The ASUS Padfone is a Smartphone that runs on Android. This Smartphone fits in the specifically designed dock in the Asus tablet. The tablet is good to look at and the Smartphone fits well in the doc provided. Overall, the Padfone has metallic edges with glossy black bezel. The Padfone has a super AMOLED touch-screen that measures 4.3 inches and 960x540resolution. The buttons provided for locking the screen and power on are well designed; the left hand side of the device contains USB port to facilitate charging, it also has an HDMI port for multimedia support functionality. These ports can be used when you dock the Padfone in the station and then connect it for charging or to your TV for viewing videos.

This phone has a dual-core 1.5GHz processor with 1GB RAM, this clearly indicates that it is capable of performing heavy internet and gaming activities without any lag. It has internal memory storage of 32GB; this too is expandable with the card slot provided at the rear end.

The Padfone Station

When we look at the innovative concept of Padfone by Asus, in one glance it is easy to notice the modular design approach incorporated. As soon as you place the phone in the Padfone station, you will be able to display the contents into a tablet with 10.1 inches of screen. All you need to do is slip the phone in the Padfone station and within a few seconds of locking the phone the device is ready to use.

The memory, processor and connectivity options are already available in the phone but the tablet is facilitated with a battery power of 6600mAh. This tablet supports 900 and 2100MHz (3G) in Australia. The only drawback it seems to have is that it is relatively bulkier as compared to other products. The thickness of the station measures 13.5mm, this is why it seems thick. When the phone is in the dock the whole device weighs 853 grams, this is clearly indicative how much heavy this device becomes when compared to other Android devices.

The overall the design is attractive but then again there is a flaw when it comes to the latch of the Padfone station. When you keep the device flat on a surface you will find it rocking due to the latch door protrusion. This creates a hindrance if you are trying to type with on-screen keyboard.

Apps and the functionality

Even after bringing out an innovative product in the technology market, the reason this might not catch the fancy of a techno geek is the lack of apps. A user will be disappointed when it comes to apps; most of the apps available for Android devices are unavailable for Padfone as these are yet to be designed according to the screen size of the tablet. Nevertheless, a user will find basic apps like Twitter, Spotify and Facebook.

You need to be careful while handling Padfone, especially when you are already working on an app or constructing an e-mail. Remember not to remove it from the device, this will result in loss of work or remove the app from the tablet.

Performance

When it comes to the performance of this tablet one might find it disappointing at times. when you are swiping through the startup screen on your Padfone then you may find it working smooth; performing the same function while the phone is in the doc will somewhat lag in performance and seem sluggish. Another thing to notice is that the apps seem to work fine on the phone as compared to tablet view. The screen flickers for a split second when dislodging the phone from the station.

Software of Asus Padfone

The software used in this device is Vanilla by Google (Android). The user will find some added apps that are provided by Google. For example, MyCloud for storing 32GB data online that is available for three years, File manager for managing documents, MyNet for media and content (DLNA) and MyLibrary.

Additionally a user will also find other basic apps such as weather widgets, e-mail functionality and a utility for Padfone Station.

Camera and Multimedia

Padfone has 8mp camera, you will be able to capture decent pictures and shoot good videos. The sharpness of color and image quality is good. The functionality of autofocus is not as expected. However, the camera quality is better when plugged into the station. The device contains a front facing camera for video chat with 1080p HD recorder.
